Special Performances: Metropolitan Opera Bass Baritone, Hao Jiang Tian
This year's celebration will feature Metropolitan Opera bass baritone, Hao Jiang Tian, whose powerful bass voice took him from his native China to the Unversity of Denver's Lamont School of Music in the early 1980's. He began his career at the Met in 1991 and since he has performed at the Met and in other major opera houses worldwide -- in over 1300 performances and 40 operatic roles. Tian has performed alongside such opera greats at Placido Domingo and the late Luciano Pavarotti.
In 2008, Tian was nominated for a Grammy Award as a principal soloist for the best opera recording of Tan Dun's The First Emperor and the same year he received the Professional Achievement Award from the University of Denver. Currently, his one-man show, "From Mao to the Met," is being aired on PBS stations nationwide and will run on Denver's Rocky Mountain PBS on January 31, 2010.
