Li Zi Elementary School

Fang Zhao, Tai Jiang, Gui Zhou Province, China

Since the "one-child policy" was enforced in China in 1993 as a means of population control, many girls and handicapped-infants were abandoned by their parents in the hope of conceiving and raising a boy, which, traditionally, would carry the family name and is therefore much preferred.

In Li Zi, a remote mountainous village in the Gui Zhou Province of China, the Nathan Yip Foundation just completed a 3,000 square foot school for the village children.

This Chinese mountain community has never had a school for the village children. The school was opened in April 2008 and 150 students now can attend school.

The Foundation sponsors all 30 students at this school and the cost is $150 per child to cover all educational supplies and school fees.
